
Batelco, Bahrain’s leading telecommunications provider, has started the process of enhancing both upload and download speeds for mobile broadband as part of the company’s strategy to enhance its networks.
The upgrade work which began on May 6, will take place in various areas up until September 8.
Mobile data use is booming, but mobile data revenue for Telecom, Vodafone and 2degrees is has risen only modestly, according to a Commerce Commission annual survey (see graphs at right).
The Commerce Commission today released its 2011 telecommunications annual monitoring report.
“Most notably we’ve seen a fall in market concentration in all sectors which indicates that competition is becoming more intense. Consumers are being offered a more diverse range of competitively priced services, often bundled together in one package,” said Dr Ross Patterson, Telecommunications Commissioner.

Verizon Wireless said Monday that it will offer a new $80 prepaid plan, offering unlimited talk, texting, and 1GB of data.
In addition, Verizon added a new prepaid data plan, centered around the Verizon Jetpack 4G LTE Mobile Hotspot MiFi, which earned a PCMag Editors’ Choice award. Verizon recently launched an international roaming plan, to boot.
The new prepaid plan will be exclusively available on the Samsung Illusion (left), which will cost $169.99. Verizon will begin the plan on May 1, at Best Buy, Target, RadioShack, and Walmart, the company said.
